Proper name [Dutch]

IPA: /ˈsɪm.pəlˌvɛlt/ Audio: Nl-Simpelveld.ogg
Etymology: First attested as semplouei and senplouoir in 1155. Derived from the Gallo-Roman toponym Latin *Sempervivetum (“Evergreen”), here perhaps referring to a forest of holly. Proposed derivations from *Simploviacum or a compound of Old Dutch semp (“rush”) and lo (“light forest”) do not match well with the oldest attestations. The current form of the toponym developed under the influence of a folk-etymological reinterpration of the name as a compound of simpel (“simple”) and veld (“field”). Etymology templates: {{der|nl|la|*Sempervivetum|t=Evergreen}} Latin *Sempervivetum (“Evergreen”), {{cog|odt|semp|t=rush}} Old Dutch semp (“rush”) Head templates: {{nl-proper noun|n}} Simpelveld n
